5 Ways to Care for Yourself in Times of Stress

1. Meet Your Sleep Requirements Every Night


It’s common knowledge that most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night to stay
healthy. If you are struggling during the days or crashing after lunchtime, consider that you may
not be meeting your sleep requirement.
While there are times when it’s difficult to get enough sleep — if you are caring for a newborn
baby, for example, or if you have to wake up early to finish work or get to that early college class
— there are ways to get more sleep while remaining productive. Going to bed even an hour
earlier can help you feel rested the next morning. If you are still tired, you may need more than
eight hours, or your circadian rhythm may be different than normal.


2. Schedule Relaxation Times

For people who like to think of themselves as busy, ambitious, or productive, relaxing can be an
almost painful activity. These type-A individuals — and others who just can’t seem to fit
relaxation time into their daily lives — can find small ways to unwind.
Take half an hour to yourself every afternoon to lie on the couch and listen to music using a pair
of earbuds that block external sound, or if you’re strapped for time, watch your favorite TV show
in 15-minute increments during your break. If being stuck at home is making your house feel a
bit claustrophobic, make it a point to declutter your living spaces and let in fresh air every day to
reduce tension between family members.


3. Reduce as Much Stress as Possible


Stress is vilified by researchers and laypeople alike for sapping the joy from life, harming
relationships, and being the root of many diseases. To find your calm, you need to pinpoint the
cause of your stress. Is it your schedule? Perhaps it’s a relationship or a friendship that has

determine if things have become sour. Try to keep a journal to understand your thoughts and

these, like magnesium, B-vitamins, and vitamin D have been extensively studied and proven to
help with stress. 
There are plenty of other natural stress busters you can embrace that are time tested and reliable.
Clearing away clutter and cleaning can lift your spirits, and just opening your curtains to allow in
natural light can be a boon. And make it a point to keep negative talk in check; even if things
aren’t to the point of toxicity, shifting to positive words and attitudes can work wonders. Positive talk works, so go ahead and talk to yourself more positively! 
If you are not able to care for yourself, you certainly won’t be able to care for anyone else! It
might take time to find the right balance between rushing around and implementing self-care,
but with some patience and practice, you will get there. It is a learning journey.
